Interview with Dr. Arthur Morrish

Featuring one of our most influential members, Dr. Arthur Morrish and his insights on Leadership, Diversity & Competition.

What do you think makes a successful leader?

VISION, it goes a long way and it what makes a successful leader, an inclusive vision that has set guiding principles. As a leader you will have a lot of power and you have to think of how you will use that power to inspire people to accomplish and achieve. In addition, when choosing a team remember diversity, it is an important factor to choose your team differently so they can approach things from different perspectives, challenge and complement each other.

What efforts are necessary to drive the creation of transformative tech solutions?

Competition. It is crucial that we have the best and brightest minds thinking about any problem.  Competition plays a major role in driving innovation, thus motivating minds to produce and find better solutions.

What serves as a guiding principle in your life?

Accept change, change is hard, just because you have a great idea doesn’t mean everyone will love it. You need to be prepared for it not to be easy. As agents of change one should work to smooth the process. Also, If you are going to be involved in change and innovation, you have to be aware that it is impacting people, understand that there will be resistance, and be prepared to deal with it efficiently.

My two favorite quotes are …

“ Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit” – Aristotle

The same thoughts hold true for innovation as well as excellence.

“Without change there is no innovation, creativity, or incentive for improvement. Those who initiate change will have a better opportunity to manage the change that is inevitable.”  Physicist William Pollard

Lessons in life …

  • Diversity is Key.
  • Change is inevitable.
  • Competition is a key driver of innovation.
  • If you settle for less, you may never achieve success.
  • Do not let the cynics define you.
